firefox tips

Remove that pesky download window that appears after downloading a file by adding the Firefox Download Statusbar Add-on to your browser. Alternatively editing the about:config settings as shown below can also disable this window from being displayed.

Open a new tab in Firefox.
In the address bar type: about:config
Locate browser.download.manager.showWhenStarting by copying and pasting the bold text into the Filter box.
Double-click the name or value to change the value from True to False. Once done close the tab.
If you’ve hidden your download Window it can still viewed by clicking Tools and then Downloads or pressing Ctrl + J.

linux shortcut keystroke

Introduction

Shortcuts are designed to help shorten the time required to perform frequently used commands or actions. In the below sections we have listed keyboard shortcut keys that can be performed by pressing two or more keys at once. In addition to keyboard shortcut keys, we have also listed command line shortcut keys that can be typed in at the shell.

Please note that the below shortcut keys and command line shortcuts will not work on all variants of Unix and/or Linux.

Keyboard shortcut keys

CTRL + B Moves the cursor backward one character.
CTRL + C Cancels the currently running command.
CTRL + D Logs out of the current session.
CTRL + F Moves the cursor forward one character.
CTRL + H Erase one character. Similar to pressing backspace.
CTRL + P Paste previous line and/or lines.
CTRL + S Stops all output on screen (XOFF).
CTRL + Q Turns all output stopped on screen back on (XON).
CTRL + U Erases the complete line.
CTRL + W Deletes the last word typed in. For example, if you typed ‘mv file1 file2′ this shortcut would delete file2.
CTRL + Z Cancels current operation, moves back a directory and/or takes the current operation and moves it to the background. See bg command for additional information about background.

Command line shortcuts

In addition to the below command line shortcuts, it is also helpful to use the alias command that allows you to specify a keyword for frequently used commands or mistakes.

~ Moves to the user’s home directory.
!! Repeats the line last entered at the shell. See history command for previous commands.
!$ Repeats the last argument for the command last used. See history command for previous commands.
reset Resets the terminal if terminal screen is not displaying correctly.
shutdown -h now Remotely or locally shuts the system down.

How to Access the Administrative Share on Networked Computers - Networking Computer Tips

If you have computers networked together in your home or office there is a way to get to the hard drive contents of the other computers even if they don’t have shares setup. Normally you can’t see the files on other computers on the network unless there have been files or folders shared and access granted to your user account.

If you are an administrator on all the computers or a domain administrator if your network is part of a Windows domain then you can access what is called the administrative share which is hidden from non administrators.

To get to the administrative share you type in the name of the computer, the drive you want to get to and then add a $ at the end. For example lets say you want to get to the administrative share on a computer named finance. You can go to the address bar in a Windows Explorer window or from a run command box and type in \financec$ to access the C drive on the finance computer. If it has another drive like an E drive then you would type \financee$. Make sure you use the \ in front of the computer name as well.

HOW TO RECOVER FOLDER OPTION..

Recently one of my friends had the same problem. His machine was hit by some viruses which disabled the ‘Folder Options’ Option in the Tools menu in Windows Explorer. This is mostly done by viruses to restrict user from viewing hidden files which one can see after changing settings in ‘Folder Options’ itself (What? You don’t know how to see hidden files? Contact me!).

For those who want to get there ‘Folder Options’ back here we have 2 ways out. Lets see the first one:

Click on ’start’ and then ‘run’.
In the ‘run’ dialog box type gpedit.msc. The Group Policy window will open.
Navigate to the following location: User Configuration> Administrative Templates> Window Components> Windows Explorer
In the right pane, find the ‘Remove the folder options menu item’. Set its value to ‘Not Configured’ by double clicking and setting the correct option.
Now if you like playing with Windows Registry, follow these steps:

Open registry editor by typing regedit in the run dialog box.
Navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Policies\ Explorer
Find the NoFolderOptions key in right pane. Change its value to 0. If you do not have this key. Just create it!
